What are UTM parameters?

UTM parameters are five tags (utm_source, utm_medium, utm_campaign, utm_term, utm_content) added to a URL so that Google Analytics can attribute a visit to a specific campaign and channel. UTM stands for Urchin Tracking Module, after the software that became Google Analytics.

In digital marketing a UTM link is an ordinary page address with these tags in its query string. When someone clicks it, Google Analytics 4 reads the values and reports the session under that source, medium and campaign instead of “direct” or “unassigned”. The tags do not change what the page shows. They only describe where the click came from.

This UTM builder does the same job as Google’s Campaign URL Builder, the official Google tool, with three additions: channel presets, automatic checks for uppercase letters and spaces, and a link history that stays in your browser.

The 5 UTM parameters explained

Three UTM parameters are required for a useful report (source, medium, campaign) and two are optional (content, term). The table shows what each one records, whether you need it, and a typical value.

utm_source

What it recordsThe site, platform or sender the click came from

RequiredYes

Examplegoogle, facebook, newsletter

utm_medium

What it recordsThe channel or how the link was delivered

RequiredYes

Examplecpc, paid_social, email, social

utm_campaign

What it recordsThe campaign, promotion or launch the link belongs to

RequiredYes

Examplespring_sale_2026, product_launch

utm_content

What it recordsWhich ad, banner or link inside the same campaign was clicked

RequiredNo

Examplebanner_top, text_link, story

utm_term

What it recordsThe paid search keyword

RequiredNo

Examplerunning_shoes

A sixth tag, utm_id, exists for linking cost data imports in GA4. This builder leaves it out on purpose: most teams never use it, and the five tags above are what every analytics tool reads.

How to create a UTM link in 4 steps

To create a UTM link, paste the landing page URL, pick a channel preset or type source and medium, add the campaign name and copy the result. Copy stays disabled until the three required fields are filled.

  1. Paste the website URL. Enter the page people should land on. If you forget https://, the builder adds it. Existing query parameters and anchors such as #pricing are kept.
  2. Pick a channel preset or type the values. Google Ads, Meta Ads, Instagram, Telegram, Email, WhatsApp and QR fill utm_source and utm_medium with the values Google Analytics expects. Then type utm_campaign, and utm_content or utm_term if you need them.
  3. Check the preview. The tracking link updates as you type, with each parameter highlighted and the length shown. Lowercase is on by default and spaces become underscores; switch either off and the builder warns you instead.
  4. Copy, open or save. Copy URL puts the link on your clipboard, Open tests it in a new tab, and Save to list keeps it in your browser so you can export the whole list as CSV.

Why use this UTM builder

This UTM builder tool exists to stop the two mistakes that quietly ruin campaign reports: inconsistent spelling and broken links. Four things set it apart from a plain form.

  • Channel presets. One click sets facebook / paid_social, google / cpc or newsletter / email, so the whole team uses the same values for the same channel, Telegram and WhatsApp included.
  • Validation before the link ships. Google Analytics treats “Facebook” and “facebook” as two different sources. The builder lowercases values and replaces spaces automatically, and shows a warning if you turn those rules off and type a capital letter or a space anyway.
  • History without an account. Save to list stores your links with their parameters in the browser and exports them as CSV. No login, no limit on the number of links you build.
  • Privacy. The link is assembled on your computer. Campaign names, landing pages and partners never reach our server.

UTM naming rules that keep GA4 clean

Consistent UTM naming is what makes Google Analytics 4 reports readable, because every spelling variant becomes a separate row. Follow these rules for every link.

  • Use lowercase only. GA4 is case sensitive: “Email” and “email” are two mediums.
  • Replace spaces with underscores. Pick underscore or dash once and never mix them; the Spaces option here does it for you.
  • Keep utm_medium to a short fixed list. cpc, paid_social, social, email, referral, display, affiliate, offline. Add a new medium only when a new channel really appears.
  • Name the platform in utm_source, not the channel. facebook, not “social”; newsletter or your email tool, not “mail”.
  • Make utm_campaign readable a year later. spring_sale_2026 beats promo3.
  • Never put personal data in a UTM tag. No names, emails or customer IDs: they end up in analytics reports and in server logs.
  • Do not use UTM tags on internal links. A tagged link inside your own site starts a new session in GA4 and breaks attribution.
  • Store every link you create. The saved list on this page, or its CSV export, is the simplest shared reference.

One note on Google Ads: with auto-tagging switched on, GA4 already receives the click data through the gclid parameter, so manual UTM tags there are a backup or a replacement when auto-tagging is off. Meta Ads Manager, by contrast, needs UTM tags in the URL parameters field of every ad.

Where to see UTM data in Google Analytics 4

UTM data appears in Google Analytics 4 under Reports → Acquisition → Traffic acquisition, where the dimensions Session source / medium and Session campaign show exactly the values you typed into the builder. Add Session manual ad content and Session manual term as secondary dimensions to see utm_content and utm_term.

The same dimensions are available in Explorations and in Looker Studio, so clean naming here pays off in every dashboard downstream. Google’s own guide to URL builders is at support.google.com/analytics/answer/10917952.

UTM builder FAQ

What does UTM stand for in marketing?

UTM stands for Urchin Tracking Module. Urchin was the web analytics software Google bought in 2005 and turned into Google Analytics, and the parameter names it used, such as utm_source and utm_medium, survived. Today every major analytics tool reads them, so UTM links work with Matomo, HubSpot and others as well as with Google Analytics 4.

What are UTM parameters used for?

UTM parameters tell an analytics tool where a visit came from. Without them, traffic from an email, a Telegram post or a QR code usually shows up as “direct”. With utm_source, utm_medium and utm_campaign in the link, Google Analytics 4 reports that traffic under the right channel and campaign, so you can compare what each one brings.

What is the difference between utm_source and utm_medium?

utm_source names the specific platform or sender, such as google, facebook or newsletter. utm_medium names the type of channel, such as cpc, paid_social or email. Together they form the Session source / medium dimension in Google Analytics 4, for example facebook / paid_social, which is why both are required.

Which UTM parameters are required?

Three: utm_source, utm_medium and utm_campaign. Google Analytics 4 needs source and medium to attribute a session, and campaign lets you compare campaigns within one channel. utm_content and utm_term are optional and add detail about the specific ad or keyword. This builder keeps Copy disabled until the three required fields are filled.

Are UTM parameters case sensitive?

Yes. Google Analytics 4 treats “Facebook”, “facebook” and “FACEBOOK” as three different sources, which splits one campaign into several rows and hides the real numbers. The Lowercase option in this builder is on by default and converts every value; if you switch it off and type a capital letter, a warning appears under the link.

Do I need UTM tags for Google Ads?

Not always. With auto-tagging enabled, Google Ads passes a gclid parameter and GA4 attributes the click on its own. Manual UTM tags are useful as a backup, when auto-tagging is switched off, or when another analytics tool needs to read the source. If you add them, use google / cpc so the values match the auto-tagged data.

Can I add UTM tags to a URL that already has parameters?

Yes. Paste the complete URL, including its query string and anchor, and the builder keeps those parts while appending the utm tags. If the URL already carries old utm parameters, they are replaced by the new values rather than duplicated, so the final link stays clean and GA4 reads it correctly.

Are my links saved on a server?

No. The builder runs entirely in your browser and sends 0 bytes to Ideluma. Save to list stores links in your browser’s localStorage on this device only, so nobody else sees them. Clearing site data or switching computers removes the list, so use Export CSV when you want a permanent copy for the team.

Is this related to UTM coordinates or the UTM app for Mac?

No. This page is about UTM parameters in digital marketing, the tags added to links for Google Analytics. The Universal Transverse Mercator coordinate system used in maps, the UTM virtual machine for Mac and Unified Threat Management firewalls share the letters and nothing else.
